Are you ready to buy a new Oakland garage door repair service? Has your current opener stopped working, or maybe you don’t even have one? Need to find the best model for you? It wasn’t that long ago that it was considered a luxury to have a garage door opener. Now it’s pretty much a standard feature for just about all homes, such is the benefit of modern manufacturing.
Why do we have to get out of the car and then get back in just to put the car away? No one – that’s who! What used to be a luxury is now commonplace in the majority of modern houses. Because people are constantly looking for more effective ways to accomplish mundane daily tasks, the manufacturing and electrics is constantly up-skilling and bettering products that are currently used. And who would disagree with this?
Most likely in today’s society, the electric automatic garage door opener that you purchase will fall into three main types, for which the differentiating factor is the mechanical drive that is used. The first and most used is the chain driven garage door opener, this is followed by the screw drives and finally the belt-driven systems.
Chains: As previously mentioned, this type of drive mechanism is one of the most popular types. It is generally going to be less expensive, as well as being the more reliable type of opener on the market. The big drawback – NOISE and a fair bit of it – chains clunk! To be honest, it’s the noisiest one of the three types of garage door openers. This could be annoying if your garage is attached to the house and your living room or bedroom is nearby.
If the garage is not attached to the house, it shouldn’t be much of an issue. However, this short period of noise is not a huge issue when compared with living on a highway etc. Another issue to consider with the chain is driven garage door opener is the horsepower of the motor. Generally, 1/2 horsepower is adequate for residential use with a double garage door, but if you need the door to move up and down quicker – you can go for a 3/4 horse.
Belts: While chains top reliability, they tend to be noisy, for obvious reasons. Some people can not deal with the noise factor. Therefore, if you are looking for something quieter an alternative is a belt driven operation. These are generally regarded as the best opener drive system in the industry. They are almost as reliable as chains but have the added benefit of being very quiet. The rubber belt drives will cost more than a chain drive, but it could pay for itself in ‘annoyance factor’.
Screw Drives: Screw-driven garage door openers tend to be the noisiest and also the slowest systems out there, however, in their favor – they tend to be the cheapest. This type of mechanism employs a threaded steel rod instead of a belt or chain. The big problem is that it needs a consistent climate for it’s best to use. Therefore, the use of this type of system would only be recommended in areas where the weather is fairly constant in temperature. If you do not use open your garage door often, this type could work for you, provided you live in a temperate region. Another thing, they are not as common and as such, there is less model choice
